Someone with critical thinking skills can be trusted to make decisions on his or her own and does not need constant handholding.
It’s no surprise that critical thinking abilities are some of the most sought-after skills in almost every industry and workplace.
They also need to be able to come up with practical solutions.
In this article I interview an expert on Critical Thinking, Dr.
Gerald Nosich from the Foundation for Critical Thinking, who has been teaching Critical Thinking since 1977 to find out how we can improve our Critical Thinking skills.
In this article you will learn: Let’s start at the beginning… Nosich: There are three major earmarks of critical thinking: One it’s reflective. What that means is that when I have a decision to make, I’m not just thinking about my decision, I’m also thinking about Notice I’m not just thinking about the decision I have to make, but I’m also reflecting on how I’m going about making the decision, that is I’m reflecting on my thinking about the decision. For example, your summary might read, “Marketing Associate with five years of experience in project management.Skilled in conducting thorough market research and competitor analysis to assess market trends and client needs, and to develop appropriate acquisition tactics.” Secondly, you can include these critical thinking skills in your cover letter. Some interviewers will even give you a hypothetical scenario or problem, and ask you to use critical thinking skills to solve it.In this case, explain your thought process thoroughly to the interviewer.I can ask myself, what do I mean by ‘fair’ in this particular circumstance?Let’s state the obvious: Why is critical thinking important? Nosich: It’s important because it’s essential for just about everything we do. You can be a parent on autopilot, but by and large you’re going to be better off if you’re asking yourself: It would be good for me to check out what are the questions I should ask him or her when my child comes home or when they’re engaged in something that I consider risky. So clear, accurate, and relevant, those are three of the standards of critical thinking, and when you engage in critical thinking, what you do is you consciously, reflectively, pay attention to those standards. And the third one, which is related to the other two, is that critical thinking by and large needs to be explicit. You might also need to engage in critical thinking with a group. In this case, you will need to work with others and communicate effectively to figure out solutions to complex problems. Creativity Critical thinking often involves some level of creativity. Open-Minded To think critically, you need to be able to put aside any assumptions or judgments and merely analyze the information you receive.
