When submitting your essay file online, include a cover page with your name, your essay title, and the list of ten acts of kindness you performed.(Note: You may create your own cover page or use the template available to download here.)Essays are accepted in English, French, Spanish, German or Japanese only, since these are the only languages the contest organizers and judges can read.
Your marker will look for your own individual voice and original ideas as well as engagement with secondary sources. This may appear obvious, but make sure you have referenced primary sources too, and the editions you are using. It may help to read your essay out loud, or only the sentences that look dubious.
You have to be particularly careful in differentiating what you have quoted or paraphrased from somewhere else, and what is actually your own opinion. Whether you choose to use MLA or Chicago (footnotes and bibliography), make sure you are following your referencing style closely. If you are quoting from a play, indicate where in play that particular line is from (e.g. 123-38); if from a novel, the page number will suffice. Look for mistakes in sentence construction, and typos. Your argument will appear much weaker if the logical links between sentences are not clear.
The submission should contain only the title and the text of the essay. Entries must be written in English, original, and never published before.
Essays are judged on the basis of creativity, interestingness, and ability to express the idea. Contact information should be written on a separate page.
Now go through the checklist below, as it should help you spot possible flaws in your essay before submitting it.
You are also strongly advised to have the essay ready between 24 and 12 hours before the final submission deadline (ideally, if not earlier), as some of the “things” in this checklist require reading the essay a few times. Check you have referenced every idea that is not yours. Is the connection between sentences and also that between clauses clear?
