After the student has successfully defended the prospectus, the cover page must be signed by the committee and submitted to the DGS at least one week prior to the faculty meeting in which it is to be considered (which shall be no later than the penultimate spring term faculty meeting).
When the prospectus is presented to the faculty, the DGS will make copies of the prospectus available for consideration and the student’s supervisor will summarize the committee’s evaluation of the proposed research.
Within two weeks of passing the Comprehensive Exam, you should identify and confirm a dissertation mentor.
Send an email to your mentor, copying the graduate administrator (GA) and the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS), and asking the mentor to reply to all (GA, DGS, and student), so the department has a record of the mentorship.
Before you submit something as important as this is, you want to make sure that it is proofread.
By now this should be second nature to make sure you work is free of errors but you would be surprised at how many students leave out this important part of their paper. The prospectus explains the dissertation's subject, positions the project in a critical conversation, offers provisional chapter outlines, and includes a working bibliography.Be sure to address how your dissertation will add to – or change – current critical conversations. The committee will convene an oral examination and discussion of that prospectus with the student. The committee may require revisions of this prospectus and additional defense meetings before giving final endorsement. The prospectus should be completed during the semester following the qualifying exams, but no later than the end of the student’s third year. requires the preparation of a detailed prospectus for original dissertation research.Enrollment in the mentor-appropriate Proposal Development is required (one credit) for all semesters up to and including the semester in which the prospectus is approved with the exception of the one semester immediately following the exam.In that semester you may enroll in Proposal Development (ENGL 0950 R01), a non-assigned section of this administrative course. You should then notify your committee that the form is ready to be signed by each member.Once it’s signed by all members and by the department chair, it is then sent to GSAS.
